Abstract:
【Background】 Rainfall and surface irrigation have the strong influence on soil water movement in the Yellow River irrigation area of Yinchuan Plain, China. However, little interest has been paid to the actual movement of the percolating water. Thus, there is still a need to investigate the dynamics of soil water regime after rainfall and surface irrigation. 【Objective】 The objective is to investigate water movement through the unsaturated zone after rainfall or irrigation and provide a theoretical basis for agricultural water resources management in arid areas. 【Method】The field observation and isotope tracing method were used to analyze the rainfall characteristics and isotopes of rainfall, irrigation water, soil water and groundwater in the unsaturated zone of Yongning Yellow River irrigation area of Yinchuan plain. 【Result】The results showed that the rainfall observed from April to October 2019 was 157.3 mm. The maximum monthly rain was in July, which accounts for 55% of annual precipitation. In general, the rainfall was characterized by small rain and moderate rain. The maximum δD and δ18O in soil water from up to down decreased. Conversely, the standard deviation of isotopic compositions in soil water at 0~50 cm was greater than others. On May 7, June 25, and June 28, the precipitation accounted for about 13.7%, 14.8% and 83.9% of soil water at 0~50 cm, respectively. The irrigation water accounted for about 49.3% ~100.0% of soil water at 0~50 cm, and 14.3%~46.6% below 70 cm.【Conclusion】There are different distribution characteristics about isotopic composition of soil water from rainfall or irrigation water in the soil profile, which indicates that the impact range of infiltration by rainfall is within 30~50 cm, and that by irrigation reaches 270 cm and that the evaporation mainly happens at 0~50 cm.
