Abstract:
The background of the concept "macroscopic capillary length" was introduced in the paper. The influence of two hydraulic properties models, the Brooks-Corey model and the van Genuchten Model, on the relationship between matric suctions and macroscopic capillary length values were calculated. The calculation results showed that macroscopic capillary length was not a constant for a soil when the Brooks-Corey model or the van Genuchten model was adopted. It was recommended in the paper that the application of the concept of "macroscopic capillary length" should be coupled with the exponential hydraulic conductivity function defined by Gardner.
