Effects of root zone restriction on water consumption characteristics and fruit quality of greenhouse muskmelon under mulch drip irrigation

Abstract:
【Background】With the development of the soil economy and the improvement of the people’s living standard, people's dietary consumption structure was changed, and the demand for high-quality fruits has been increasing. The measures that affect root growth can affect the aboveground growth, yield and quality of plants. Root system is the basis of crop growth, which directly affects the nutrient uptake and development of the plant. Moderate root restriction cultivation can effectively overcome the problems of soil salinization, continuous cropping obstacles and nitrate leaching in conventional greenhouse vegetable production, and improve the yield and quality. However, severe root restriction could significantly inhibit the vegetative and reproductive growth of crops, reduce the accumulation of dry matter, and lead to a significant decline in yield and quality. Different crops need different root space to achieve water-saving and high-quality production. At present, the research on root space of muskmelon for water-saving and high-quality production has not been reported.【Objective】It has practical significance that study the suitable way and depth of root restriction by which to regulate the growth and water consumption characteristics of Muskmelon cultivated in greenhouse. 【Method】 The effects of root restriction on the water consumption, dry matter accumulation, yield and fruit quality were studied in this study using cultivar "Xizhoumi 25" as the test material, together with treatments of two root restriction methods (gauze and plastic) and six root restriction depths (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 cm).【Result】 The results showed that compared with conventional planting mode, the root restriction with gauze exerted no significant effects on dry matter accumulation, yield and fruit appearance quality of muskmelon. Root restriction with plastic significantly reduced the dry matter accumulative amounts, yields, fruit transverse and vertical longitude, and fruit shape index. The water use efficiency of muskmelon with 10 cm and 20 cm mesh increased by 10.90% and 5.47%, respectively. Moreover, the water use efficiency of muskmelon under 10 and 20 cm of plastic root restriction increased by 8.06% and 4.39% respectively. In contrast, the water use efficiency of the muskmelon plants decreased significantly when the root restriction depth was too much deeper. These results suggested that root restriction property significantly affects the nutritional quality of melon. In addition, the contents of soluble sugar, soluble solids and acid sugar ratio of fruit were significantly increased by root restriction of gauze across treatments with 10, 20, 30 cm depths and plastic restriction depths of 20, 30 and 40 cm.【Conclusion】 On the basis of discussing suitable root limiting method and root limiting depth, it is concluded that under greenhouse conditions, the root restriction of gauze with depth of 10~20 cm is not significant on vegetative and reproductive growth of Muskmelon under greenhouse cultivation condition. It effectively improves the water use efficiency and the fruit quality, which can act as a suitable root zone restriction mode.The irrigation moist layer of muskmelon is 10~20 cm.
