Response of Water Control at Different Stages on Water Consumption, Yield and Quality of Capsicum annuum under the greenhouse substrate cultivation in the Gobi Desert |

【Background】Water resources are overly scarce is the main bottleneck restricting the development of vegetable in Gobi desert area. Research shows that water deficit irrigation is one of the effective measures to deal with water shortage. Pepper is the main solanaceous vegetable cultivated in the Gobi greenhouse in the Hexi Corridor of Gansu Province. Although there are many studies on crop water consumption and regulated deficit irrigation, most of them focus on soil cultivation. However, there are few reports on the water consumption characteristics and water-saving irrigation of pepper cultivated in substrate solar greenhouse in Gobi desert area of Hexi Corridor.【Objective】The objective of this study is to bring forward a suitable water-saving efficient irrigation pattern for improving fruit quality based on the response of quality of pepper cultivated in substrate culture in Gobi desert area of Hexi Corridor to water deficit.【Method】Under the conditions of mulch drip irrigation, with Longjiao No.11 for the material, the effects of different water treatment on the water consumption characteristics and response of yield, fruit quality and water use efficiency to different water deficit treatments at seedling, initial flowering, initial fruit and full fruit stages of pepper under the greenhouse substrate culture was studied.【Result】The results showed that the water consumption at full fruit stage was the largest in the whole growth period, and the water consumption modulus was the highest, and the key period of water demand in the whole growth period of pepper cultivated in substrate. Seedling stage and full fruit stage was the most sensitive stage to the plant height, stem diameter, soluble sugar, soluble protein, Vc, nitrate and yield of pepper. The substrate moisture was kept at 70%~80% of saturated water content (θF) at seedling and full fruit period, and deficit irrigation at the initial flowering and initial fruit stages, compared to the substrate moisture was kept at 70%~80% θF in the whole growth stage, the content of fruit soluble protein and Vc increased by 5.59% and 5.82% respectively, the nitrate content was reduced by 0.89%, the yield increased by 6.43%, water use efficiency increased by 18.77%.【Conclusion】Substrate moisture should be controlled between 70% and 80% θF at seedling and full fruit stages, and 50% to 60% θF at initial flowering stage, and 60% to 70% θF in initial fruit stage is a suitable water-saving efficient irrigation pattern for improving fruit quality, which can improve fruit soluble protein and Vc content, reduce the nitrate content and hardness with higher yield but less water. |
