Evaluation of water-energy-food synergy security based on water-energy-food nexus in Henan Province

Abstract:
【Objective】To fully grasp the water-energy-food nexus and scientifically evaluate its synergy security in Henan Province, 【Method】this research firstly analyzed the water-energy-food nexus. On this basis, the concept, connotation and evaluation criteria of water-energy-food synergy security were introduced, and then established an evaluation index system, the water-energy-food synergy security in Henan Province was evaluated by adopting the evaluation method of single index quantification and multiple index synthesis and policy-criteria integration (SMI-P). Concretely, the first step of the method is single index quantification, the fuzzy membership function is used to map each index to [0,1] by assuming that there are multiple node values of each index. Secondly, the index of each criterion layer is calculated by summing the membership degree of each index weighted. Thirdly, the index of the target criterion layer is calculated by summing each criterion layer weighted.【Result】Results showed that during 2001-2019, ①the energy utilization efficiency in water production and supply and the water resources utilization efficiency in energy production were not optimistic, it would be urgent to improve technology, therefore the win-win goal for water and energy saving would be gradually achieved; ②water utilization efficiency in grain irrigation was improved, and agricultural water saving achieved certain results; the energy consumption structure in food production became more reasonable, and changed towards a clean and environmentally friendly direction; among them, the proportion of electricity consumption increased by 19.74%, and the proportion of diesel, fertilizer and pesticide consumption decreased by 10.34%, 5.98%, and 3.42%, respectively; ③water-energy-food synergy security changed from basic security level (0.46) to the relatively safe level (0.6); during the early stage, it was closely related to the energy security and the economic and social development, and in the later stage, it was gradually restricted by basic resources such as water resources and food; ④the level of water resources security was low, with large inter-annual fluctuations, remaining at a relatively unsafe level of [0.2, 0.4) for a long-term; while the level of food security was high and always maintained a relatively safe or secure state. 【Conclusion】The level of water-energy-food synergy security in Henan Province needs to be improved.
