Abstract:
【Objective】 The effects of biochar on the soil hydraulic properties are the prerequisite and basis for its application to improve coastal saline soils. 【Method】 Through soil water infiltration experiment, the effects of different biochar additions (0%, 0.3%, 0.5%, 0.8%, 1.0%, 3.0%, 5.0%, 8.0% by mass) on the water conductivity and water holding properties of typical coastal saline-alkali soil were conducted. 【Results】The experimental results expressed that (1) the water infiltration rate and saturated hydraulic conductivity of the test soil showed increased first and then decreased with the biochar increase. The biochar addition amount <1.0% was beneficial to the soil water infiltration, >1.0% was restricted to the soil water conductivity. The 1.0% addition was an important turning point affecting the soil water conductivity; (2) the moisture characteristic curves showed that the application of biochar could significantly improve the water holding capacity of coastal saline soil with the increase of char content. However, the excessive addition of biomass char reduced the soil permeability and the hydraulic conductivity of coastal soil. 【Conclusion】When using biochar as conditioner to improve coastal saline-alkali land, determining the reasonable amount of biochar addition will affect the improvement results.
