Abstract:
Gradation and thickness are two key factors to restrain soil water evaporation and conserve soil moisture for the gravel-sand mulched field. However, knowledge of their effects on movement of soil moisture and salt under the condition of irrigation with brackish water is limited. A soil column simulating experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of gradation and thickness of gravel-sand mulching stratum on dynamic distribution of soil moisture and salt under brackish water irrigation for a period of 1 month. The objectives of the experiment are to clarify the law of soil moisture and salt with treatments of gradation and thickness of gravel-sand and make clear effects of gradation and thickness on soil moisture redistribution after infiltration. Treatments included 3 gradations, which are coarse, medium and fine, respectively and 4 thicknesses (0cm, 5cm,10cm and 15cm) of gravel-sand mulching stratum. Results showed that gradation had a slight influence on soil moisture and salt distribution under same thickness whereas the effectiveness of soil moisture conservation with medium gradation was less than those of coarse and fine gradations. Whether the thickness of gravel-sand mulching stratum was small or large, gravel-sand mulching conserved soil moisture evidently and inhibited salt accumulation in the surface soil layer in contrast to bare soil treatment. Soil moisture redistribution and infiltration were affected remarkably as the thickness was more than 10cm. In a word, the effect of gradation on disatribution of soil moisture and salt is less than that of thickness and gravel-sand mulching can keep more soil moisture and suppress salt accumulation on the soil surface even just 5cm thickness.
