Abstract:
[Objective] Vegetation restoration can lead to the variation of the soil hydrodynamic performances. Soil water characteristic curve is defined as the relationship between soil water content and soil suction. The objective is to investigate the response of soil water holding capacity and soil water availability to different land vegetation types (grassland, shrub land and forestland). [Method] The soil water holding capacity were measured and soil water availability obtained from the soil water characteristic curves at three vegetation restoration types in the Ziwuling forest region located in the central part of the Loess Plateau. [Result] Our results showed that both soil water holding capacity and soil water availability increased from grassland to shrub land to forestland during the natural vegetation restoration. [Conclusion] The soil particle composition, soil bulk density and soil porosity play the important role in the change of the soil water holding capacity and soil water availability. The results of the study could provide a helpful reference for planning the land use types during the vegetation restoration.
