Bibliometric analysis on the progress of projection pursuit method and its applications in water problems

Abstract:
Because of the complexity and diversity of nature and human society, practical problems are often affected by many factors, and often encounter non-normal, non-linear high-dimensional data. And it is often difficult to obtain satisfactory results when processing with traditional data analysis methods. Projection pursuit method is proposed in this context. Since it appeared in the late 1960s and was officially named by Friedman, Tukey in 1974, the projection pursuit method has developed rapidly in the world. Chinese scholars have also carried out a lot of research on projection pursuit since the 1980s. To this day, projection pursuit is widely used because of its good high-dimensional data processing ability and flexible problem-oriented characteristic.【Objective】In order to analyze the research status of projection pursuit method and find out the hot points and difficult points in the currtent, and explore its development trend in China on this basis, statistical analyses based on the literatures collected from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database were made. 【Method】Statistical analysis was made from four aspects: time distribution, subject distribution, journal distribution and keyword co-occurrence. And with the help of the visualization analysis function of bibliometrics provided by VOSviewer, research hotspot clustering were carried out. 【Result】It is found that the projection pursuit research in China is roughly divided into four stages: the first is the early stage of research from 1984 to 1992; the second is the slow stage of development from 1993 to 1999; the third is the stage of rapid development from 2000 to 2010; and the fourth is the stage of stable development after 2011. Researches in water conservancy engineering, environment and quantity economy are the strong disciplines of projection pursuit method. Four of the top five journals with the largest number of literature come from the field of water science, which indicates that projection pursuit is widely used in water science. The research hotspots of projection pursuit include comprehensive evaluation, regression model, scheme selection and dynamic clustering. Compared with other disciplines, projection pursuit is more used in water problems. Based on the results of clustering, the research progress of projection pursuit in water problem is summarized from five aspects: theoretical research, water quality evaluation, water resource carrying capacity, water safety and water resources system vulnerability.【Conclusion】It is found that the application of projection pursuit in water problems is mostly focused on evaluation problems, and is lack of in-depth theoretical research.On this basis, the future development trends of projection pursuit research were put forward: in theoretical research aspects, we should continue to deepen the idea of projection pursuit, explore the method of determining projection index function and window width radius, deepen the coupling between projection pursuit and other methods; In application research aspects, we should broaden the application range of projection pursuit, such as applying it to diagnosis identification, early warning, decision making, and continue to study its application in prediction and evaluation in depth, such as improving prediction accuracy and carrying out dynamic evaluation.
