Study on the Effect of Settling and Purification Device to Purify Non-Point Source Pollutants from Paddy Field Drainage

Abstract:
【Background】Taihu lake region is one of the most important rice production areas in China,and rice-wheat rotation system is typical here. Excessive water and fertilizer inputs and low nutrient use efficency of fertilizers lead to nutrients losses. There is abundant rainfall in Taihu lake region, however, most of the annual rainfall is concentrated in the rice season. The nutrients derived from fertilizers released into rivers through runoff is one of the main causes of non-point source pollution.【Objective】 The objective is to study the removal efficiencies of the main non-point source pollutants in runoff from rice fields by using sedimentation-promoting and purification device and seek for the in-situ technology.【Method】In 2015, five rice fields were selected from the provenance research and development base in Qingcun Town, Fengxian District, Shanghai, and a set of sedimentation-promoting and purification device with a volume of about 1.9m3 was built at the drainage outlets of each field. Each device was filled with plastic polyhedron hollow ball and zeolite with a volume ratio of 1:2 inside, and the outer part was filled with zeolite. Concentrations of suspended solids, total nitrogen and phosphorous were detected in both inflow and outflow when using the devices.【Result】In the rice-growing season, the removal efficiencies in suspended solids, total nitrogen and phosphorous in runoff were 61%, 33% and 34% when using sedimentation-promoting and purification device, respectively. The removal efficiencies of suspended solids by using the device were positively logarithmically correlated with the corresponding concentrations in inflows, as well as total phosphorous. In contrast, A linearly negative correlation was observed in total nitrogen.【Conclusion】The sedimentation-promoting and purification device could effectively remove the main non-point source pollutants in runoff from rice fields. By using the device, the concentrations of non-point source pollutants were mitigated, the water body environment was improved, and the balance in aquatic ecosystem was maintain without affecting the water velocity.
