Study on Optimal Layout of Underground Drainage Pipes in Farmland Using RZWQM2

Abstract:
【Background】Hetao Irrigation District (HID) is one of the important commodity grain and oil production bases in China. Sunflower is one of the main economic crops in HID. The agricultural water is mainly drawing from Yellow River in this area irrigation water. One of the main reasons for soil salinization in HID is the relatively backward construction of drainage facilities. Subsurface pipe drainage is a important technology to control drainage and salt by burying subsurface pipes. In recent years, it has been applied in HID. However, the unreasonable arrangement of underground pipes makes the soil moisture in the field too low, which affects crop growth. Meanwhile, how to improve irrigation water use efficiency is a practical problem in HID because of the mandatory water saving. Drainage control, achieving the purpose of soil moisture conservation and yield increase, is a kind of water management measure to reduce drainage output timely and appropriately. Therefore, it is necessary to study soil moisture change during the whole growth season under subsurface drainage, to optimize the layout of subsurface drainage, to design the drainage control scheme reasonably, to increase crop yield, and to conserve soil moisture in HID.【Objective】Based on the study of soil moisture change in sunflower planting in HID under subsurface drainage, the paper puts forward the suitable arrangement of subsurface drainage pipe and control drainage scheme.【Method】the RZWQM2 model was calibrated and verified with the field experimental data from 2018 to 2020. The model was used to simulate the soil water movement and crop growth under different drainage schemes (different buried depth with the same spacing and different spacing with the same buried depth) and control drainage schemes (different drainage outlet depths in different periods). 【Result】(1) The drainage capacity could be increased and the groundwater level could be reduced by increasing the buried depth and decreasing the spacing of buried pipes., The yield increased first and then decreased with the drainage capacity increase. (2) Under the condition of existing underground drainage pipe layout, sunflower yield could be increased under appropriate drainage reducing and groundwater level raising by setting different drainage outlet depths in rainy season and non-rainy season. 【Conclusion】RZWQM2 model can simulate the soil moisture change in sunflower planting area under drainage. It is recommended to use 1.4 m buried depth and 45 m spacing of underground drainage pipes. The existing drainage control scheme of 1.5m in rainy season and 1.2m in non-rainy season is more suitable.
