Effects of integrated water/biogas slurry irrigation at different growth stages on growth, yield and quality of tomato

Abstract:
【Objective】In order to explore the effects of applying biogas slurry to tomatoes at different growth periods, optimize the integrated water and fertilizer supply technology for greenhouse tomatoes in northwest China, and provide technical support for the production of high-quality tomatoes in this area. 【Method】The study applied the biogas slurry solution (the volume ratio of biogas slurry to water is 1/4) at different tomato growth periods by greenhouse experiment, and the results are compared with that of no biogas slurry applied (CT). The growth period is divided as the seedling period (labelled as P1), blooming and fruiting period (P2), fruit expansion period (P3) and at the fruit ripening period (P4). 【Result】The results show that all treatments with biogas slurry application can promote the growth, the dry substance, the production and the quality of tomato plants effectively. The most beneficial treatment to the growth of tomato leaf area is P2, followed by the treatment P3, which increased by 48.32% and 36.89% respectively compared to CT. the treatment P3 accumulates more than 47.18% of the fruit dry substance when compared with CT treatment. Moreover, the soluble sugar, titratable acid, sugar-to-acid ratio and hardness are improved most in the treatment P3, while the vitamin C and soluble solids are the best in the treatment P2. 【Conclusion】Based on the comprehensive benefit evaluation of the TOPSIS method, which is a combination of analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy method, the results show that the fruit expansion period of tomato is the key period for the formation of production and quality, in which the input of water and fertilizer moderately can improve the agricultural income. The research is helpful to the scientific and reasonable application of water and fertilizer during the whole growth period of tomato under the integrated water and fertilizer irrigation mode.
