The effects of biochar on soil properties in coastal tidal area

Abstract:
【Objective】In order to improve soil physicochemical properties, reduce surface soil salinity and improve soil fertility, thereby improving productivity of coastal tidal soil and realizing the sustainable agricultural development in regional area, 【Method】a pot experiment with six treatments was carried out by applying normal biochar (A) and acidified biochar (B) with different application rate (2%, 4%, and 8%); in addition, the traditional cultivation without biochar application as the control (CK), to study the impact of biochar on soil physicochemical properties. 【Result】The results indicate that all of the biochar treatments significantly reduced soil bulk density, increased soil porosity and effectively enhanced soil water holding capacity. Furthermore, the higher the application rate was, the stronger the positive effect was, and the improvement effect of normal biochar is slightly better than that of the acidified biochar. The moderate biochar application rate can enhance soil salt leaching, improve the desalination rate and adjust soil pH value. Soil desalination rate under B2 treatment (acidified biochar at 2%) is the highest (72.05%), whereas high application rate of normal general biochar (A8) is not conducive to soil desalination. The addition of biochar can significantly increase the contents of soil organic matter (SOM) and nitrate nitrogen, all of the nutrient was highest under A8 and B4 treatments. 【Conclusion】 Generally, both normal biochar and acidified biochar can effectively reduce soil salinity and improve soil fertility in coastal tidal area. Comprehensive considering soil water, salt and fertilizer variation, the acidified biochar at the application rate of 4% is recommended in the study area.
