Effect of biochar amendment on soil characteristics and cotton seedling growth in saline soil

Abstract:
【Objective】Aim at the application of biochar in saline soil, the response of characteristics of saline soil and the growth of cotton seedlings to different biochar additions was explored.【Method】In order to analyze the effects of biochar on the soil water-salt transport, soil physicochemical properties, soil enzyme activities, and growth indicators of cotton at the seedling stage, cotton (Medium S9612) was selected as the research object through the barrel, and four treatments were set with 0%(BC0) 1%(BC1) 3%(BC3) and 5%(BC5) of biochar content.【Result】The results showed that biochar improved the mass moisture content of the 0-20 cm soil layer whose increase was negatively correlated with biochar addition amount, but had no significant effect on the mass moisture content of the 20-30 cm soil layer. Biochar reduced soil salt content of the 0-20 cm soil layer. Biochar had no significant effects on soil pH, total phosphorus(TP), and available phosphorus. It enhanced soil organic carbon(SOC), total nitrogen(TN), total potassium(TK), available potassium, peroxidase(POD), and fibro two glycosidases(FTG), with the most significant increase in POD and FTG activities in the BC1 treatment. However, there were remarkable negative effects on soil alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen and polyphenol oxidase(PPO). Under BC1 treatment, cotton stem diameter and above-ground dry matter accumulation increased significantly at the seedling stage, but plant height did not change obviously. The BC3 treatment had no significant effects on plant height, stem thickness, and above-ground dry matter mass of cotton. And the plant height, stem diameter, and above-ground dry matter accumulation of cotton at the seedling stage decreased significantly under BC5 treatment. Also, the addition of biochar caused a reduction in the total nitrogen content of cotton stems and leaves.【Conclusion】Biochar can increase soil nutrients and improve some soil enzyme activities, , but only 1% biochar addition amount has a beneficial effect on cotton seedling growth and 5% biochar addition amount inhibits crop growth.
