Effects of different particle sizes of water absorbent polymer on soil moisture characteristics and growth and development of tobacco seedlings under drought stress

Abstract:
【Objective】The effects of different particle sizes of water-retaining agents on the water characteristics of the soil-water-retaining agent mixture system and the growth and development of tobacco seedlings under drought stress were studied, in order to provide a theoretical basis for improving the drought resistance of tobacco. 【Method】The different particle sizes of water-retaining agents (T1: 0.3-1.0 mm, T2: 1.0-2.5 mm, T3: 2.5-4.75 mm) were mixed with soil, and no water-retaining agent was used as a control. The effects of the maximum water content, water absorption rate and water retention rate of the soil-water-retaining agent mixed system, and the effects of different particle sizes of water-retaining agents on the growth and development of tobacco seedlings under drought stress were studied through pot experiments. 【Result】The maximum water content of the soil-water-retaining agent mixed system treated with 2.5-4.75 mm particle size water-retaining agent was the highest, which was 30.49% higher than that of CK. The soil-water-retaining agent mixed system treated with 1.0-2.5 mm particle size water-retaining agent had the highest water retention capacity , the smaller the particle size of the water-retaining agent, the faster the water absorption rate; Treatment with water absorbent polymer with a particle size of 1.0-2.5 mm effectively alleviated the adverse effects of drought stress on tobacco seedlings and promoted the biomass accumulation of tobacco seedlings. The total water content, relative water content and free water content of tobacco leaves were increased by 4.9%, 24.3% and 11.8% respectively compared with CK. Compared with CK, bound water, bound technique/free water, and water saturation deficit were decreased by 5.3%, 16.2%, and 63.5%, and the activities of SOD, POD, CAT, MDA, and soluble protein were decreased by 53.5%, 67.9%, 40.1%,and 73.2% ,21.4% respectively, compared with CK. which reduced the H2O2 content of tobacco leaves.【Conclusion】The soil-water-retaining agent mixed system treated with 1.0-2.5 mm particle size water-retaining agent had a higher maximum water content and the strongest water-retention capacity, which effectively alleviated the adverse effects of drought stress on tobacco seedlings.
