Effects of Shallow-Buried Straw Interlayer on Soil Water and Salt Migration and Tomato Growth in Coastal Saline Soil

Abstract:
【Objective】The shallow-buried straw interlayer can inhibit the rapid desalting of coastal saline-alkali soil in Jiangsu province, promote crop growth and yield increase, and realize the improvement of saline-alkali soil, the utilization of straw resources and the efficient agricultural production.【Method】Tomato pot experiment was carried out, and straw interlayer was laid 17 cm below the soil surface, and different salt ratios of upper and lower layers(1:1, 2:4, 1:5, 3:3) were set to study the effect of shallow-buried straw interlayer on water and salt migration in jiangsu coastal saline-alkali soil ,and to the growth and physiological response characteristics of tomato under the condition of shallow-buried straw interlayer.【Result】(1)Shallow-buried straw interlayer significantly reduced soil water consumption by 5.7%~15.0%.The reduction of salt content in the upper soil was 9.6%~24.5% higher than that in the treatment without interlayer. The increase of salt content in the lower soil was lower than 36.1%~155.0% in the treatment without interlayer.(2) The number of root distribution in the upper layer of shallow-buried straw interlayer treatment increased significantly. The root mass density, root length density and root surface area density were significantly increased by 31.7%~40.0%, 20.6%~35.1% and 26.3%~26.6%, respectively. The root system in the lower layer was more elongated. The root length per unit mass in the lower layer was significantly higher by 29.9%~38.2%, and the difference in average root diameter between the upper and lower layers was significantly higher by 29.2%~48.3%.(3)The shallow-buried straw interlayer treatment significantly increased the dry matter accumulation of tomato above-ground parts by 3.3%~28.8%, increased tomato yield by 12.1%~80.7%, and increased irrigation water utilization efficiency(IWUE) by 19.1%~62.5%.The gain effect was better in high salt environment.【Conclusion】Shallow-buried straw interlayer can effectively regulate water and salt migration, improve desalting effect, alleviate salt stress of tomato, and promote tomato growth and yield, which has great application significance and value.
