Study on the effect of different irrigation water qualities and nitrogenapplications on soil salinity and key ions contents for drip irrigation in Xinjiang

Abstract:
【Objective】Drip irrigated with brackish water is a way to relieve water shortage for arid regions, especially in Xinjiang. The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanism of water quality and nitrogen application on soil salinity and ionic changes for drip irrigation.【Method】A pot experiment was carried out in Alar, Xinjiang, including three nitrogen application rates (255, 315 and 375 kg/hm2) and three water irrigation qualities (groundwater (1.27 g/L), brackish water (3.03 g/L) and saline water (5.00 g/L)).【Results】The results showed that the total soil salt content, soil sodium and calcium ion concentrations under brackish water and saline water irrigation were greater than those under groundwater irrigation by 14%~78%,42%~197% and 58%~253%,respectively. In addition, the soil sodium adsorption ratio (SAR) and exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP) increased by 5%~109% and 48%~90%, respectively. Whereas, higher nitrogen application (315 and 375 kg/hm2) reduced soil salinity, soil sodium and calcium ion concentrations by 11%~70%, 6%~42%and 21%~138%.Soil SAR and ESP decreased by 5%~27%and 3%~19% respectively. 【Conclusion】Soil salinity increased with the increase of salt content in the irrigation water. And appropriate increase in nitrogen application (315 kg/hm2) could reduce soil salinity, key ion content, and thus alleviate soil salinization.
