Abstract:
【Objective】The Gansu section of the Yellow River Basin is a critical ecological barrier in the upper reaches of the Yellow River Basin. It spans arid and semi-arid regions, characterized by fragile ecosystems, limited water resources and a socioeconomic structure that is highly dependent on agriculture and energy. The implementation of the national strategy of ‘Ecological Protection and High-Quality Development of the Yellow River Basin’ demands addressing the imbalance between the subsystems of water resources, economic growth and ecological preservation in the nexus. This paper investigates the integrated coordination of the three subsystems in the region.【Method】Based on a system analysis framework, a multi-index evaluation system was constructed, which encompassed three categories of indicators: ① water resource indicators, including water use efficiency and per capita water resources; ② socioeconomic indicators, including GDP per capita, industrial added value, rural per capita disposable income; ③ and ecological protection indicators, including vegetation coverage, water and soil conservation area, and wetland area. The entropy weight method was employed to determine the weight of each indicator, and an integrated coordination model was applied to assess the coordination intensity and overall development level of the nexus from 2013 to 2023.【Result】① The comprehensive evaluation indices of the three subsystems in the region showed a steady increase from 2013 to 2023, with integrated development index of the nexus increasing from 0.260 in 2013 to 0.620 in 2023. ② The primary coordination degree improved significantly from ‘on the verge of maladjusted recession’ in 2013 to ‘stable moderate coordinated coupling’ in recent years, indicating a shift from unbalanced development to balanced synergy. ③ Pairwise analysis indicated that water resources and socio-economic development were highly coordinated, followed by coordination of socio-economic development and ecological environment. In contrast, water resources and ecological environment system were least coordinated.【Conclusion】The coordination level of the water-economy-ecology nexus in the Gansu section of the Yellow River has been improving since 2013, driven by ecological protection and developmental strategies implemented in the regions. However, the lack of noticeable water-ecology coordination underscores the need for improving system synergy and sustaining long-term development of the region.
