Response of maize nitrogen utilization to intercropped leguminous green manure with different nitrogen application rates

Abstract:
Abstract:【Objective】To clarify the effect of intercropping leguminous green manure on the nitrogen utilization of maize with different nitrogen application rates, so as to provide theoretical support and practical basis for nitrogen-saving green production of maize.【Methods】In this study, a split plot experiment design was adopted, with the main plot consisting of maize and common vetch intercropping (M||V), and maize sole cropping (SM), and five nitrogen application rates were set in the split plot: the locally recommended nitrogen application rate of 360 kg N/hm2(N360); the 25% reduction of nitrogen application rate of 270 kg N/hm2(N270); the 50% reduction of nitrogen application rate of 180 kg N/hm2(N180); the 75% reduction of nitrogen application rate of 90 kg N/hm2(N90); and no N treatment(N0). The soil nitrate N and ammonium N were determined before sowing and at the time of maize harvesting, and the grain yield, nitrogen accumulation and allocation, nitrogen fertilizer utilization and nitrogen fertilizer partial productivity of maize was investigated, finally, the response of maize nitrogen utilization to intercropped leguminous green manure was analyzed.【Results】Before sowing and at the maize harvesting, the nitrate N and ammonium N of 0~40 cm soil in the maize belt was increased by intercropped leguminous green manure, and made no significant difference in the nitrate N and ammonium N between N270 and N360 in the intercropped maize belt. The dry matter accumulation, nitrogen accumulation and seed nitrogen allocation ratio of maize intercropped with leguminous green manure was increased by 5.8%, 9.1% and 6.2%, respectively, compared with that of maize sole cropping. While, the dry matter accumulation and nitrogen accumulation of intercropped maize was not different between N270 and N360. The grain yield, N fertilizer utilization and N fertilizer partial productivity of maize with reduced nitrogen application rates was increased by intercropped leguminous green manure. The grain yield of maize was no significant different between M||VN270 and M||VN360, while it was significantly greater than that of SMN360, while the N fertilizer utilization and N fertilizer partial productivity of maize with M||VN270 were significantly greater than those of M||VN360 and SMN360.【Conclusion】Under the condition of 25% nitrogen fertilizer reduction, the nitrogen accumulation of maize was increased by intercropped leguminous green manure, and there was no decreasing of the maize grain yield. Finally, the nitrogen utilization rate and nitrogen partial productivity was improved by intercropped leguminous green manure. which can be used as a reference for the green production technology of maize nitrogen saving in arid irrigation region.
