Abstract:
【Objective】In response to the problems of excessive reliance on nitrogen fertilizer and low water use efficiency in maize production in the oasis irrigation area, this study explores the impact of intercropping fresh peas with reduced nitrogen fertilizer and biochar application on the water use characteristics of maize, providing a theoretical basis for nitrogen-saving and water-efficient crop production. 【Methods】This experiment was carried out as a split - plot experiment from 2022 to 2023. The main plots were maize intercropped with fresh peas(M||P), sole maize(SM) and sole fresh peas(SP). The sub - plots were the nitrogen application rate recommended by local authorities(N1, 360 kg N/hm2)and a 30% reduction in nitrogen application(N2, 250 kg N/hm2). The sub - sub - plots were the application of biochar(C) and no application of biochar(A). The purpose was to explore the water - use characteristics of maize and its impact on yield under different treatments. 【Results】The results showed that under the treatment of 30% nitrogen reduction, intercropping fresh peas with the application of biochar could maintain a relatively high soil moisture content in the maize strip. Compared with other treatments, it significantly reduced water consumption and improved the water use efficiency of maize during the whole growth period. Specifically, the soil moisture content of M||PN2C was 23% and 15.7% higher than that of SMN1A at the pea harvest stage and maize harvest stage respectively. The water consumption during the whole growth period decreased by 16.2%, and the water use efficiency increased by 20.5%. The grain yield of maize in M||PN2C increased by 6.4% and 17.8% compared with M||PN1A and SMN1A respectively, and there was no significant difference compared with M||PN1C. Intercropping maize with fresh peas and applying biochar can effectively improve the soil moisture content, reduce water consumption, enhance the water use efficiency of maize, and achieve efficient utilization of water resources under the treatment of 30% nitrogen reduction. 【Conclusion】Therefore, in the Hexi Oasis Irrigation District, reducing nitrogen application by 30%(i.e., applying 250 kg/hm2 of nitrogen)and applying biochar can significantly increase the yield and water use efficiency of intercropped fresh peas. This is a production approach suitable for nitrogen - saving and efficient water - use in crops in this region.
