Abstract:
The arid northwest region of China serves as a critical ecological barrier and agricultural production zone, where water scarcity and ecological fragility are the primary constraints on sustainable agricultural development. Mulching measures, as an essential agricultural technique in arid regions, demonstrate significant advantages in improving soil moisture conditions, enhancing water use efficiency, and promoting ecological restoration. This article systematically reviews the types of mulching measures in the arid northwest, their water regulation effects, and ecological benefits. It analyzes the impacts of different mulching methods on soil moisture dynamics, crop water use efficiency, and regional water cycling. Furthermore, it provides an in-depth examination of the ecological benefits of mulching in two key aspects: vegetation restoration and biodiversity conservation, as well as carbon sequestration and climate change mitigation. Additionally, the review identifies the challenges and limitations in the application of mulching measures and explores future research directions and practical prospects, aiming to provide a theoretical foundation for efficient water resource utilization and ecological protection in the arid northwest regions.
