Abstract:
【Background and Objective】Large- and medium-sized irrigation districts are critical infrastructures for agricultural production and water conservation in China. They have attracted extensive research over the past decades. This study systematically analyzes the evolution of irrigation district research in China from 1992 to 2024, focusing on publication trends, research hotspots, and patterns of collaborative networks.【Method】A total of 409 journal articles were retrieved from the CNKI database using the search term ‘irrigation district evaluation’ Bibliometric and network analyses were conducted using CiteSpace software. Temporal distribution analysis was used to identify publication trends over time; institutional collaboration networks were mapped to examine inter-institutional cooperation; and keyword co-occurrence and clustering analyses were performed to identify research hotspots and thematic structures. To enhance the validity of the results, the bibliometric findings were cross-referenced with national policy documents and technological development reports, ensuring consistency between research trends and real-world developments. 【Result】①Journal publications from 1992 to 2024 underwent four phases: slow growth, low-speed increase, rapid expansion, and fluctuating decline, with a notable surge between 2007 and 2010. ②The published journal papers predominantly focused on hydraulic engineering and agricultural engineering. ③Inner Mongolia Agricultural University and North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power were the main institutional contributors to these publications. Institutional collaboration networks were sparse, with a co-occurrence network density of 0.004 3. ④Keyword clustering identified eight thematic clusters: soil, large-scale irrigation districts, irrigation districts, Yinhuang Irrigation District, evaluation, groundwater, weighting, and Hetao Irrigation District. ⑤Recent research has emphasized gate design and remote sensing for evaluating the Yinhuang and Hetao Irrigation Districts. ⑥Future research appears to prioritize policy-responsive evaluation and the integration of multidisciplinary technologies.【Conclusion】Irrigation district research in China has evolved in close alignment with national policy initiatives and technological advancements. To further advance the field, future studies should focus on three key areas: ①developing evaluation frameworks that are responsive to policy requirements; ②integrating advanced multidisciplinary technologies; and ③strengthening institutional collaboration to promote knowledge sharing and coordinated research.
