Abstract: |
This paper investigated the spatio-temporal change of water uptake by winter wheat root from soil. The plants were grown in plastic columns, and stable isotope in soil at different depths was measured at wintering, greening, jointing, heading, grain-filling and ripening stages. We then calculated where the roots took up water using coupled-model and the iso-Source multiple linear regression model. The results showed that the winter wheat mainly took water fromthe 0~20 cm of soil during the wintering and greening stages and 0~40 cm of soil during the joining stage. The coupled-model predicted that the plant took water from 0~40 cm of soil at the heading stage, while the regression model told that the water uptake depths were 0~40 cm and 80~100 cm. The difference between the two modelswas the water taken up by roots from 180~200 cm at the filling stage, with the coupled-model overestimating water uptake compared with the regression model. Both models showed that the plant roots took water from 0~40 cm and 80~100 cm of soil at the ripening stage. |
