Abstract:
【Objective】 Foliage application of androgen is able to reduce plant transpiration and the objective of this paper is to understand how different applications impacted the yield and quality of greenhouse cucumber, as well as the water use efficiency (WUE). 【Method】 The experiment examined the impact of volumetric fraction of the compound as well as how it was applied over the growing season on the yield and WUE of the plant. We considered four volumetric fractions: N1(0 mL/L), N2(0.5 mL/L), N3(1.5 mL/L), N4(3 mL/L), with each being applied either once (T1), or twice (T2) or three times (T3) to the cucumber over its growing season. During the experiment, we measured the fresh weight, photosynthetic characteristics, fruit quality, WUE and yield of the cucumber. 【Result】 In all treatments, the compound was found capable of promoting plant growth and reducing transpiration. With the increase in the volumetric fraction, the crop biomass increased first and then declined, while the transpiration decreased monotonically; applying the compound in several times over the growth season increased the crop biomass. It was additionally found that low to moderate volumetric fractions significantly increased soluble sugar, soluble protein and the Vc content in the cucumber compared to the CK - spraying just water. For example, when the volumetric fraction was 1.5 mL/L, applying it in three times within the growing season increased soluble sugar, soluble protein and Vc content by 21.55%, 14.73% and 30.9% respectively. With the volumetric fraction increasing, both yield and WUE increased first and then declined, while under the same volumetric fraction, applying the compound in several times increased both yield and WUE. The results revealed that at volumetric fraction of 1.5 mL/L and applying it in three times was most effective, increasing the yield by 2.9% and WUE by 9.56% compared to the CK. 【Conclusion】 Our experimental results showed that the way of applying androgen affected crop growth and its WUE. For the cucumber we studied, the volumetric fraction of 1.5 mL/L and applying it in three times over the growing season was most effective in improving both yield and WUE.
