Abstract: |
【Objective】 The purpose of this paper is to present a method to improve determination of the crest level in the surge-preventing shaft in irrigation systems with open pipe conveyances. 【Method】 The method was based on the principle of water balance and energy conservation, in which we maximized the water level in the tank to derive the crest level by simulating the irrigation system under all possible operation conditions. We validated the method against a low-pressure pipe irrigation system at Qingpu irrigation district in Shanghai, China.【Result】 The water level in the surge-preventing shafts obtained from the simulated results varied from 4.18 m to 4.49 m, it was comparable with the design crest level of 4.8m to 5.0m, meeting the operation requirement. 【Conclusion】 Testing the proposed method against a real irrigation system revealed that the calculated crest level in the surge-preventing shaft was appropriate and reliable . |
